Teaching Practicum

Add a Teaching Practicum to your TEFL Certification!

 

This 20-hour, blended online and hands-on training is designed to provide valuable teaching practice for TEFL trainees or current teachers who wish to gain classroom experience and become more competitive for teaching jobs.

In this course, you’ll first establish an onsite mentor, then complete 10 hours of tutor-guided online preparation, 5 hours of EFL teacher observation, and 5 hours of hands-on teaching practice in a real EFL classroom.

 

You can complete this Guided Teaching Practicum Certification from anywhere in the world, working at your own pace during the 3-month course timeframe.

Learning Objectives
 

When you graduate, you’ll be able to:

  • Describe teacher behaviors observed in classrooms.

  • Evaluate effective instructional strategies based on student/teacher observations.

  • Construct lessons based on instructional strategies in readings and viewings.

  • Summarize teaching experience in journals and lesson reports.

  • Assemble a professional teaching portfolio.

Requirements to take this course:

 

  • 18 years of age.

  • An intermediate or higher level of English proficiency (B1 level, according to the CEFR, the Common European Framework Reference for Language)

  • Teaching experience or a general TEFL/TESOL certificate (recommended).

Assignments/Assessment

Throughout the course you will:

  • Read and view material found in the course, as well as in linked online resources, teacher’s contributions, and other included components.

  • Complete self-check, non-graded quizzes in each unit to check your understanding of these materials.

  • Observe an EFL classroom for 5 hours.

  • Teach in a real EFL classroom for 5 hours.

  • Produce a portfolio documenting their completion of assigned tasks, including structured observations of other teachers, reporting on those observations, establishing an on-site mentor, setting personal goals for their teaching, keeping a teaching journal, and responding to feedback.

  • Analyze the concepts found in course materials to draw inferences in your written assignments (such as forum posts and essays) regarding best practices in English language.

 

Certification is issued to trainees who receive a passing grade of 70% or higher in the course. This grade is based on the successful and timely completion of all components of the required portfolio, including the following:

Task 1 – Description of Teacher and Teaching Context
Task 2 – Identification of On-Site Mentor
Tasks 3-12 – Observations of Teaching based on a minimum of 5 one-hour classes observed

 

In addition, the course requires trainees to participate in two Skype conferences with their tutor to track course progress and portfolio completion.
